    Wishlist

    Hi Matt,

I can't see in the forums (although my wife would say I am having a man's look!!!) but is there a way to list the comics from a series I have as well as those I don't?  For example, If I have Darkhawk 1 to 50 but not number 35, I still like to have all listed on comicster but be able to say with a condition owned yes/no?  And then somehow export or print the no's?

I love the program by the way, and the ability to specify digital comic location is fantastic.

    Thanks

    Hi Luinistari,

I have a wishlist idea for the next version of Comicster, but rather than an "owned y/n" field it was going to be a separate folder (so your collection would have an "Owned" folder and a "Wanted" folder).

I'd love some feedback from folks to help decide which way to go with wishlists/wanted items.

    Thanks Matt

One of the things I love about Comicster is the ability to click on say JLA folder and have all the cover scans whether they are in my collection or not.  Is it possible to have two folders under JLA, owned and not owned, be able to drag and drop between those folders, and still have all the scans display when the main JLA folder is clicked?

If not, is a y/n field the easiest way to go? and have the ability to query based on theat field and title?

    Cheers

Hmm. I really like the idea for having seperate folders for this rather than adding another field with "Owned" as its flavor.

I do not like having comics I own listed along with comics that I do not own. I find it to be cumbersome when browsing. A display dependant on a filter by field value would remedy this if they were listed together, but your folder scheme would act as a sort of strain, while being both simpler and more intuitive (obvious). In contrast to what I imagine manifesting as your folder idea (which I am for, as stated above) there is the "other" way that comic software typically does this: they simply throw out long lists of comics, with a field that either has a "y" or "n" or "0" or "X" in it indicating whether a copy is owned. These "y"s are usually then swamped by "n"s, and it is typically a trial in patience simply to find what I am looking for, or to tell by a cursory look what I have and do not have. I believe ComicBase still does it this way. Collectorz.com uses a filtering system, but it is semi-annoying to me.

Anyway, I think the folder scheme(owned/not owned/wanted/missing/whatever you decide to label them) is consonant with the basic operating scenario that Comicster is based on (paradigm schmaradigm).

Then again, a field devoted to storing this value (of whether it is owned or not) would potentially be quite a bit more future proof. And this, surely, has to be taken into account.

It also occurs to me that if you include something along the lines of a field or folders for indicating the ownership status, you may then also become obligated to create another field for "#. of Copies", or something similar. A slippery slope towards database-ishness?

I agree with feeling obligated to add other fields.  The beauty of Comicster is its simplicity in use.  One thing I am don't like about a lot of databases is a lot of fields wanting purchase price, number of copies, etc, etc.  As a simple comic collector, when trialling other databases they usually end of with only a smattering of information.

I like having the usual (title, publisher, vol, ish) along with cover scan, story line, characters, creators.  These all mean something to the average collector.  Again, this where Comicster comes into its own with the ability to alter skins and leave out fields they won't use.

Long winded but what I am getting at is keep Comicster simple, folder orientated.  Still by far the best design of all I have seen and tried.

    Re: Wishlist

If I have a book that I match to the DB online, and I make a change on my end, I want that match/link removed.
