Me and the Xbox 360
Depite what people assumed, I wasn't waiting in line at midnight Wednedsay night to pick up a pre-ordered Xbox 360. In fact, I didn't get one 'til yesterday. I almost didn't though, and here's why:
The Xbox 360 in Australia comes with an official adapter to connect the unit to a TV using SCART. SCART is a European standard, but many televisions in Australia use it, since we also have the PAL video format. My TV, in fact, has three SCART inputs, two of which will accept component and RGB video signals.
The problem is, though, that the SCART adapter that comes with the Xbox only supports composite. It can't do the higher-end signals to get a better picture.
Worse still, there are no official accessories in Australia that can do component or RGB via SCART! There weren't even any third-party cables or adapters in stores! Also, if you don't have an "advanced" cable that can do component or RGB, you don't get the digital optical audio output, so you lose the 5.1 sound!
So I was pretty bummed about that. I didn't want to buy an Xbox 360 and be stuck using a composite connection to my TV. I certainly didn't want to be stuck with stereo sound through my TV speakers when I've been playing the original Xbox through my (pretty decent) 5.1 system for years!
So I came home from my shopping expedition yesterday morning empty-handed.
I then jumped online, and after much searching around, found this: An RGB via SCART cable with optical audio out for Xbox 360, from Joytech. Huzzah!
Knowing that the cable is on its way, I went back down the street and bought the Xbox. I picked up Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter too. Now all I have to do is find an online store that'll sell me one of those SCART cables. Amazon.co.uk refuses to ship it to Australia. Yay.
I'll post my thoughts on the Xbox 360 in a future post. Stay Tuned!

Hey, how'd you go with that Joytech scart cable. I just bought the 360 and seeing as my tv only has 2 scart connectors and I have to connect my VCR to the top one I cant use the stupid adapter thingy supplied with it without having to plug/unplug each time I use it. Where did you order your cable from?

Hi Damien,
The JoyTech cable rocks. I have it connected to the back of my DVD player, which has a passthrough connection, so if the DVD player is turned off, the TV shows the 360.
I got it from www.gameplay.co.uk.

Thanks for that - I'll give gameplay a go - I went everywhere looking for one and no one has them in Brisbane yet.
I noticed while packing up my original XB yesterday that the cable I have now is joytech - obviously this doesn't fit the 360 unfortunately, well since MS changed every single connector on the 360 anyways. I've got a redundant wireless headset, 2 x steering wheels etc now too.

No-one has them in Australia as far as I know - high-end SCART adapters simply weren't released out here. That's why I had to source one from the UK.

Ordered one from sendit.com (also UK). Gameplay didnt have any and I got an email back from Joytech saying they didnt have them here as the most popular connection was component. Kinda weird given they used to import them for the original Xbox - what, everyone threw their tv's with scart connectors away? Bizarre. Anyway, happy gaming - my gamertag is omen666au if you want to add me in XBL. Later

Added! Isn't it neat that you can add friends from the web site nowadays, rather than having to do it from the dashboard?

That scart cable turned up - took about 7 days from the UK from order, can't complain. Bloody huge difference on my tv, much sharper and brighter. I didnt realise you could add friends on the site. I've added you to the blogroll on my site.
